How to Play Klondike Solitaire

Klondike Solitaire uses a single standard 52-card deck. The goal is to move all cards to the four foundation piles, organized by suit in ascending order from Ace to King.

1. Build the tableau by placing cards in descending order with alternating colors (e.g., black 7 on red 8).
2. Move cards to the foundation starting with the Ace of each suit, then 2, 3, and so on up to King.
3. Draw from the stock when no more moves are available on the tableau.
4. Move Kings to empty tableau columns to free up buried cards.
5. You win when all 52 cards are in the foundation piles.

Valid Moves

• Stock → Waste: Draw a card from the stock pile
• Waste → Tableau or Foundation: Play the top waste card
• Tableau → Tableau: Move cards or sequences between columns
• Tableau → Foundation: Move a card up to its foundation pile
• Foundation → Tableau: Move a card back to unblock other cards (advanced strategy)

• Always play Aces and Twos to the foundation immediately — they never block other cards.
• Expose face-down cards as your top priority. Turning over hidden cards gives you more options.
• Do not empty a tableau column unless you have a King ready to fill it.
• Keep foundation piles balanced — do not build one suit far ahead of the others, or you may block useful cards.
• Use the undo strategically to explore different move sequences.

Are All Solitaire Games Winnable?

No — roughly 80% of Klondike Solitaire deals are theoretically winnable. Some hands simply have no solution due to the random arrangement of cards. If you find yourself stuck, do not worry — start a new game and try again. Other variants like FreeCell have a win rate close to 99.99%.
