How to play Klondike Solitaire

Klondike Solitaire is often referred to as just “Solitaire” or patience.

If you are new to solitaire or returning from not having played in a long time, we will show you how to play Klondike Solitaire. Let’s go over a few Solitaire related terms that will help you understand the rules when explained.

The first solitaire related terms is the “tableau” this refers to the largest part of the playing area which contains seven columns where you can move your cards while playing.

Next we have the “stock”. This is the pile of cards that you will have available to draw from. When you draw a card from the “stock” a card will be face up in what is referred to as the “waste” this is the card that you are then able to play into either the tableau or foundation.

What is the “foundation” you may ask? This is where ultimately you want all of your cards to end up. This refers to the the section on the board where the four suits are placed in ascending order organized by suit.

You may be asking why would you want to move a card from the foundation to the tableau? Isn’t the main goal of Klondie to get the cards into the foundation? While that is the main goal of Klondike and the game is complete once all of the cards are organized in the foundation in order and suit. It is an important Klondike strategy that can help you win games. By moving a card from the foundation to the tableau, this may enable you to move a card from the waste to the tableau that you otherwise would not have been able to move.

Are all games of Solitaire solvable or winnable?

There are unwinnable games of Solitaire so don’t feel bad if you are stuck in a game that does not have a solution. On average about 80% of Solitaire games are winnable. The Klondike version of Solitaire has many hands which are not winnable. This is often why versions of online Solitaire will have a only winnable deals option. Other variants of Solitaire have a very high success rate such as Yukon.
